The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is – after Down’s syndrome – the most common chromosomal abnormality in humans. On one of both chromosomes 22, a small part of the genetic material is deleted. High-risk children could qualify for preventative treatment, either with medication and/or psychological support.
The University Medical Centre Utrecht/Wilhelmina Children's Hospital would like to examine which characteristics of young children with 22q11DS are linked to a considerable drop in their IQ, followed by the development of mental illnesses such as psychosis and schizophrenia. Armed with the results of this research, physicians may in future be able to which children with 22q11DS have a very high risk of developing a rapid drop in IQ, psychosis and schizophrenia.
