Support for forest project in Wevelgem (Katerbos)

Proposed by Rudi Vanderjeugd

4000 euro

Natuurpunt is an independent volunteer association that protects vulnerable, endangered countryside in Flanders. Natuurpunt Wevelgem currently manages 12.5 hectares of grassland in the Leievallei, Wevelgem.

In 2024, Natuurpunt Wevelgem will launch a new project: the Katerbos. This will be a local 6-hectare woodland for the municipality, adjoining the built-up area. In time, the woodland will have much to offer local residents in addition to a new natural environment: soft recreation and play options for children. At the same time, it is also an important local climate project: woods provide cooling and absorb CO2.

Planting 6 hectares requires several thousand trees and bushes; a real challenge that would certainly benefit from the Fund’s support. They also want to involve a lot of residents in this project (for example by planting trees), especially children through schools and clubs (children’s spades are essential to really make this happen). In short, this support creates greater biodiversity and appropriate vegetation in the municipality of the Alpro manufacturing site.
