Natuurpunt Wevelgem - Development of nature reserve in the Lys valley

Proposed by Rudi Vanderjeugd

A donation of € 5,000

Natuurpunt is an independent organisation of volunteers that protects vulnerable and endangered nature in Flanders. Last year, Natuurpunt Wevelgem purchased 12.5 hectares of land in the Lys Valley for development as a nature reserve. There isn’t much nature left in Wevelgem and nature development in the Lys Valley is important for biodiversity and sustainability. The inhabitants of the municipality and the region surrounding Alpro will all benefit from this!

A large part of the purchase had to be financed by the volunteers of Natuurpunt in Wevelgem and they would like to start development in part of this area this autumn. Therefore, a contribution from the Alpro Social Fund would be especially appreciated as it would be used to plant an orchard with many traditional fruit trees native to the Lys Valley, creating a large pond surrounded by newly sown seeds from plants indigenous to the region, a large hedge, an insect hotel as well as a large picnic table and bench for visitors.
