Pelicano Foundation – Support to Belgian children in poverty

Proposed by Kathleen Jacobs

A donation of € 3,000

Pelicano offers long-term support to Belgian children living in dire poverty. For Pelicano, “long-term” means that they will continue to support children/adolescents from the moment they become a Pelicano child/adolescent up to the age of 18 or longer if they continue their studies. Upon the acceptance of a Pelicano child, all children from the family automatically become Pelicano children as well. Furthermore, Pelicano provides ad-hoc support to children whenever needed, for instance for speech therapy, orthodontics, etc.

The organisation aims to adopt and support Pelicano children as young as possible because it has been scientifically proven that young children who grow up in dire poverty may sustain permanent brain damage. The Pelicano Foundation and its volunteers don’t know any of these children or parents themselves. They always work with care partners such as schools, PSWCs, boarding schools... These care partners introduce the children. Pelicano tries to provide all adopted children during their school career with everything an average child needs so as to break the vicious circle of poverty in a structural way.
