Tanderuis vzw – ASStheek

Proposed by Astrid De Maertelaere

A donation of € 2,500

The non-profit organisation ‘Tanderuis vzw’ offers mobile and outpatient support (educational support and psycho-social support) to families in East Flanders who have a family member with autism. The name ‘Tanderuis’ refers to ‘the other house’ or ‘a house for people who are different’. Tanderuis vzw offers various forms of outpatient support:

  • Early support: families with children up to the age of 4 in whom autism is presumed or has been diagnosed.
  • Support to children: families with a child with autism up to the calendar age of 12.
  • Support to adolescents: families with an autistic child between 12 and 18 years old.
  • Support to adults: a counsellor comes to the house to discuss together with the autistic person (and – as the case may be – other persons within his/her network) difficulties in his/her daily life and – together – look for practical solutions.

Support from the Fund would help to renovate the ASStheek. This is their reception and information centre lending out toys, books, audio-visual media and special tools for creating a controlled multisensory environment. The ASStheek is a source of information for both the staff of Tanderuis and the wider public.
