Tom Triatlon – Breaking the barriers of triathlon for disabled athletes

Proposed by Mathieu Dedecker

A donation of € 2,500

Martin, a 53-year old sportsman from Bruges, and Tom, a mentally disabled young man of 20 years as well as the boy next door of Martin, take up the challenge to participate in the Triathlon of Bruges and to swim, cycle and run all the way to the finish, using especially designed equipment, among which a small boat to pull Tom over a distance of 1 km, a customised bike with a seat for Tom and a trolley, and supported by a whole team of volunteers.

The ultimate goal is to extend this project by incorporating an association and offering several disabled sports enthusiasts the opportunity to take up a similar challenge together with experienced triathletes and, by doing so, increase their self-esteem.

The entire organisation of this event is supported by lots of volunteers who help Martin and Tom, free of cost, to realise their goal. Unfortunately, purchasing the necessary equipment and creating an adjusted trolley and bicycle require considerable investments for which support from the Alpro Social Fund would be very welcome.
