vzw Datdakan was founded by three committed, inspiring young people with the aim of dreaming bigger, of a more human world, starting with oneself. The need for something sustainable was demonstrated by the work in the camps at Dunkirk and the critical situation of refugees in our country. Therefore in February 2022 they began a shelter initiative for people arriving in the country who were temporarily homeless. The house was christened ‘Madafa’ and represents the non-profit’s primary challenge.
Madafa is a house that the organisation uses to temporarily accommodate people who have fled their own countries and currently live on the streets. These people have submitted a ‘request for international protection’ in this country but have not yet been offered accommodation. They are currently hosting seven people. They live together and wash, cook and clean for themselves. Volunteers call in almost every day in order to spend time with them, teach them Dutch, help with shopping and follow up on legal proceedings.
