vzw Pinocchio represents the interests and well-being of children and young people with burn injuries in Belgium, by organising a range of activities. Every year, approximately 400 children are admitted to Belgian burn centres, half of them under five years old. That’s more than one child a day! A hospital stay is a highly emotionally stressful experience for children and young people. By various methods, vzw Pinocchio tries to make their stay more pleasant and tolerable (Tommy the Clown, toys, activities etc.). It also provides financial and mental health support. And finally, vzw Pinocchio also organises numerous activities for children and young people with burns such as: mother and child thermal treatment camps, reintegration camps, 16+ activities, classroom reintegration and the Sinterklaas party.
vzw Pinocchio asks for financial support to organise a family day. School holidays in Flanders and Wallonia no longer coincide, which means they have to move their reintegration camp (usually during the Easter holiday) to the summer holiday. As a result the young burn patients will not see each other for a very long time. In order to prevent this from happening, the organisation would like to hold a family day in the spring, inviting burn patients and their families to the zoo. Here they can enjoy a great day together and exchange stories of their healing processes. The aim is to boost the spirits of the children and their parents. Burn injury gatherings are an essential part of the recovery and future of every burn patient.
